The increase in revenues is the result of strong organic growth (5.9%) complemented by positive external growth (1.8%).

Commenting on the results for 2019/2020 and the company's financial performance, Hervé Hélias, CEO and Chairman of the Mazars Group, said: “This has been a year like no other for people, companies and society. In the midst of a global pandemic, with a focus on the safety of our people and ensuring that we continued to provide high-quality services to our clients, Mazars demonstrated extraordinary resilience, achieving growth of 7.8%, mostly organic. The outstanding efforts of our people to continue serving our customers and fulfilling their responsibilities enabled us to do more than just weather the storm in 2020.”

Keeping a long-term perspective: a strategic plan for the next four years

Despite the crisis, Mazars continues to invest and plan for its future. More than 1,100 partners recently voted to approve the new strategic plan, “One24”, a title that identifies the uniqueness of Mazars' partnership model. The plan articulates the group's action map for the next four years, capitalizing on Mazars' strengths and the attributes that distinguish it: quality of service, integrated operation and international consistency, dedication and concern for clients and teams.

The new plan seeks to continue the group's transformation and secure Mazars' position as an international leader in the areas of auditing, tax and consulting, while investing in talent, client experience, service innovation and ways of working. Over the next four years the firm will continue to focus on its priorities: client focus, quality and risk management, international growth, operational integration, talent development and contributing to building a fair and prosperous world.

Looking back, Hélias says: “The pandemic and the related economic crisis certainly bring a challenging period, but we are looking beyond that, investing in our organization and our people to deliver what our customers need and expect from us. We have defined a strategy that secures our place in the market and continues to create the company of the future, ensuring that we attract and develop exceptional talent, deliver high-quality experiences to our customers and, above all, build trust by acting responsibly.”

A renewed and diverse leadership team to implement the strategic plan

To support the One24 program, Mazars has revised and strengthened its governance structure, which comprises the Group Executive Board (GEB) and the Group Governance Council (GGC). The new governance team was elected during the virtual partner conference in December 2020.

Of the 23 members elected to the GEB and GGC, 10 are women: this means that 44% of Mazars' governance positions are held by women, representing strong gender diversity in the firm's leadership.

Hervé Hélias was re-elected Chairman of the GEB and two new members were elected: Mark Kennedy, Managing Partner in Ireland since 2016, and Julie Laulusa, Co-Managing Partner in China since 2010. Laulusa and Kennedy join nine other re-elected GEB members: Hervé Hélias, Pascal Jauffret, Rudi Lang, Taibou Mbaye, Christoph Regierer, Veronique Ryckaert, Ton Tuinier, Phil Verity and Victor Wahba. Antonio Bover retired after 3 terms (12 years) and Wenxian Shi moved from member to permanent guest.

The GGC is now composed of Asa Andersson Eneberg, Gertrud Bergmann, Maria Cabodevilla, Frank Bournois, Kathryn Byrne, Juliette Decoux, Fabrice Demarigny, Denise Fletcher, Chris Fuggle, Tim Hudson (Chair), Michelle Olckers and Liwen Zhang.

“Having a long-term perspective is critical, as is having the right team to execute our strategy. As we look to implement our four-year plan, we have developed our governance team to ensure that we have the right leaders with a diversity of backgrounds and styles to make our strategy happen.”, says Hélias.

In 2020, Mazars welcomed 78 new international partners from 30 countries. The new partners represent various service areas - audit (54%), tax (17%) and outsourcing (12%) - as well as a wide regional diversity.

In Portugal, Mazars also posted an excellent result in 2019/2020. The firm grew 21% compared to the previous year, with a turnover of 11.1 million euros. Today it has 200 people and six partners spread across offices in Lisbon, Porto and Leiria.

For Luís Gaspar, Managing Partner of Mazars in Portugal, “the last year has been a great challenge for all of us, in human and growth terms. We launched a new service line in Portugal and invested in consolidating a team dedicated exclusively to auditing financial services (banking, insurance, investment funds).”

“We have ambitious goals for 2021: to continue growing and adapting to the new demands of the market, both in terms of human resources and technology, as well as new company features, guaranteeing a wide, professional and efficient range of services.”

Committed to bringing a different perspective and contributing to the balance of the auditing profession

In October 2020 Mazars launched its new brand identity which reaffirms its commitment to long-standing values: integrity and responsibility. The new brand reflects who we are and the unique experience we strive to offer our people and our clients, empowering them to lead and prosper by doing the right thing.

This rebrand celebrates the way Mazars has transformed itself without compromising its culture, values and unique business model and the way it offers a different perspective to the audit, tax and advisory market. It also reaffirms our commitment to building a prosperous and fair world as well as a healthy industry. Due to our strong position in the PIE audit market, Mazars takes responsibility for ensuring that auditors, who have a public interest mission, can deliver beyond expectations. Consistent with the purpose of the brand, the group wants to take a leading role in the debate on auditing, to promote significant changes in the profession and to contribute to the public debate involving all stakeholders.

Hélias concludes: “Our new four-year strategic plan reinforces our intention to accelerate our transformation and strengthen Mazars” position as an international leader. We want to continue to improve the way we serve our clients and develop our talents, making Mazars a knowledge-intensive firm and a school of excellence. Quality will remain at the heart of all our activities, and we want to continue to foster a true culture of quality and risk management. Financial transparency and trust are the essence of a fair and prosperous economy, and auditors are a central part of that ecosystem. It's time to collectively rethink how the profession works. We believe it is our responsibility to help shape a more balanced market and we will play our full part in this transformation over the coming years."

The latest annual report is available here.

About Mazars

Mazars is a leading international audit, tax and advisory firm that aspires to build the economic foundations of a prosperous and just world.
