There are a number of fundamental characteristics of the mass media that are not new in the history of human communication. But thanks to the rise of the media media<\/a>, have taken on new significance.<\/p>\n

Higher levels of interactivity, in which users can interact and engage in dialogue, collaboration, and content creation, are a hallmark of social media and lead to engagement and participation.<\/p>\n

Public Relations and the Media<\/p>\n

Public relations should involve two-way communication. However, traditional media have historically provided few opportunities for this. But through their interactive nature and open access, social media enable and facilitate two-way communication. Social media offers the potential to significantly improve public relations.<\/p>\n

True communication must involve dialogue. Openness toward the other party is essential for building relationships. In public relations, there is an emphasis on two-way interaction. For this reason, by providing opportunities for two-way communication, the media enable dialogue-based public relations.<\/p>\n

In the early 20th century, with the growing popularity of social media, there was a profound shift in the media landscape as interaction between professional and amateur media content creators increased. Today, people who were previously referred to as consumers and audiences produce a large portion of the news, information, and multimedia content in circulation.<\/p>\n
