It's not pressure, it's a necessary process

What are performance appraisals?

Performance appraisals are designed to assess the performance of an individual or a specific group of company employees. They are a people management tool that makes it possible to understand the commitment of the employee(s) to the company, in particular the degree of identification, professional attitude, technical knowledge and/or, for example, the relationship with work partners.

Are they a means of choosing who gets fired?

No. Evaluating employees and their performance is a process that must be carried out in all companies. Evaluations make it possible to see the company's shortcomings and opportunities. Above all, whether the employee is fulfilling their role and generating results. If the opposite is the case, plan A should be a joint effort between the company and the employee to understand how the employee can improve their performance and align their results with those desired by the organization.

Performance appraisals can influence stress and are sometimes misunderstood by employees. But in reality, they are just a necessary process to boost the organization's results.

The foundation of any organization is to generate more, to increase business. Regardless of the sector or type of organization, this is always the ultimate goal. And we all know that without employees, an organization can't move forward. In fact, without motivated employees.

If you're a boss, make it clear to your employees why you do these appraisals, and don't let your relationship with them or the organizational dynamic be compromised. On the other hand, if you're an employee, always do your best and don't be afraid of, or let yourself be affected by, performance appraisals. Stay productive and don't take stress in your co-workers, realize that these, contrary to what you assume, are essential for you to keep your job, and that they allow the company to evolve.
