Checking the AdBlue system and avoiding breakdowns

Euromaster recommends checking the AdBlue system as part of the vehicle's preventive maintenance. The workshop network is working on training in these systems for all professionals.

AdBlue

Lisbon, August 30th, 2023 - AdBlue is a component designed to reduce polluting emissions from diesel vehicles. However, this system is causing many headaches for drivers due to lack of maintenance, which can result in a breakdown of up to 1,200 euros, according to Euromaster, a network of workshops specializing in comprehensive vehicle maintenance.

AdBlue doesn't really need maintenance, but it does need servicing. For this reason, Euromaster recommends that the system be checked at every general vehicle overhaul, depending on the number of years or kilometers driven. In this way, a professional will check the system for faults, the tank for leaks and clean the AdBlue injector in the exhaust system using a diagnostic.

AdBlue is very prone to crystallizing, which can lead to blockages and the pump itself malfunctioning. This process results in a vehicle breakdown that can cost between 800 and 1,200 euros, depending on the model.

In fact, given the increase in the number of vehicles entering workshops due to this problem and others related to anti-contamination systems, Euromaster is providing specific training this year for network professionals in the correct testing, maintenance and repair of these systems, including AdBlue.

Vehicle won't start when AdBlue tank is empty

The arrival of AdBlue is relatively recent - it was approved for use in 2014 - and only diesel vehicles are equipped with this system. All cars equipped with AdBlue have a warning of the kilometers remaining until the next fill-up, and in fact, checking the level of this tank is just as important as checking the level of petrol: if the liquid runs out, the vehicle can reach its destination, but it won't start again until it has been refilled.

Most vehicles give several advance warnings as the kilometers run out and, when the AdBlue level is low, the engine failure warning lights up. Depending on the make, AdBlue should be refilled every 10,000 to 20,000 kilometers, depending on the model.

Remember that AdBlue is non-polluting, colorless and odorless. This component reduces the polluting emissions produced after engine combustion, so that manufacturers can comply with the European Euro 6 standard, which obliges them to reduce the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere.
