Euromaster: Three essential factors for knowing when to change your car's tires

What are the three factors to consider when changing your car's tires?

Wear, time and kilometers traveled are decisive. Euromaster recommends assessing tire wear, pressure, alignment and general condition.

Driving safety begins with the car's only point of contact with the ground: the tires. Aware of the importance of this fundamental element, the Euromaster, a specialist in tires and comprehensive vehicle maintenance, reminds us that the right time to replace them depends not only on visible wear, but also on factors such as the length of time the vehicle has been used and the mileage.

First of all, As far as wear is concerned, this should be assessed by observing the design of the tire tread, i.e. the surface of the tire that rests directly on the ground. According to current legislation, the minimum tread depth of the tire cannot be less than 1.6 mm (on passenger cars). However, Euromaster recommends not letting it fall below 2 mm, in order to ensure correct water evacuation and optimum grip, especially in wet conditions.

In second place, However, the passage of time or the age of the tire also directly affects its performance. Even if, at first glance, the tires may appear to be in good condition, the rubber hardens over the years, losing elasticity and giving rise to the phenomenon of so-called “crystallized tires”. This occurs when the rubber, exposed to the sun, heat and oxygen, hardens and loses elasticity, causing a loss of grip and cracks to appear, which reduce traction and grip on the ground. For this reason, Euromaster advises replacing tires every four years, even if they have not reached the wear limit or the maximum mileage.

In third place, However, mileage is another determining factor. Mileage varies according to driving style, road conditions, maintenance, pressure levels and the quality of the tire's manufacture. In this context, Euromaster recalls that tires premium, Although they represent a greater initial investment, they generally offer more durability and a more homogeneous performance over their lifetime.

Taking into account these three factors: wear, time and mileage, Euromaster workshops carry out a free tire check, in which qualified professionals perform a complete visual inspection, assessing wear, pressure, alignment and the general condition of the assembly.

Finally, Euromaster stresses that driving with tires in poor condition not only compromises road safety, but also increases fuel consumption and accelerates the wear of other vehicle components, such as suspensions and steering.
