KCS Terceira Tech

KCS iT has expanded its R&D unit, its office on Terceira, which is now celebrating its first year of operation. KCS Terceira Tech focuses on developing projects that combine innovation and sustainability, drawing on local insights.
The KCS iT office located on Terceira Island in the Azores is celebrating its first anniversary in October. During this time, the consulting firm’s R&D unit was expanded and given the name KCS Terceira Tech.
The KCS iT office in the Azores has a team of seven members dedicated to developing technically innovative projects supported by local resources, with a focus on the areas of health and sustainability and a positive impact on the community and biodiversity.
As Luís Dias, Business Unit Manager and head of the KCS Terceira Tech center, explains, “Among the work to be carried out locally are several projects that incorporate not only the implementation of new technological solutions but also innovation applied to the social and environmental context. These are projects that contribute to the future of the planet and the coming years of humanity. Our goal is to equip KCS iT with a team dedicated not only to innovation but also to product delivery and development.”
KCS Terceira Tech is currently developing two solutions: CEPAD and the “Cetáceos App” (name not yet finalized).
Since the cost of issuing paper invoices is more than double that of issuing digital documents, governments and companies are looking for ways to digitize their invoices, and there are an increasing number of legislative measures to streamline the transition to digital. This time-consuming and costly process presents an opportunity for improvement.
CEPAD is a project developed primarily using technologies open source and leveraging the consulting firm's partnership with Microsoft. The KCS iT team investigated possible solutions to improve character recognition success rates and is currently developing models for machine learning tailored to the specific nature of this type of documentation, enabling users to create templates so that the model can become increasingly accurate in its recognition.
The product is currently in the development phase and has already been submitted to SIFIDE, a government program that supports R&D initiatives aimed at promoting business competitiveness.
Many whale-watching companies collect data during their trips, ending the season with a huge amount of paper-based information full of incomplete data that eventually falls by the wayside.
The “Cetáceos APP” is based on the experience of a team member in the field of marine biology. After studying the processes and practices for recording and identifying individuals, clear opportunities for improvement and problems to be solved were identified.
KCS iT is currently investigating new solutions for identifying individuals based on specific characteristics (e.g., the shape and markings on the caudal fin) to create a model that will streamline the entire process of cataloging sightings. New technologies such as ML.NET are being explored, along with proven tools in the field of machine learning, to streamline this development process.
Projects of this type allow the consulting firm to expand its work into unexplored areas and help create products that can be used by universities, NGOs, and companies in the fields of environmental protection and marine biodiversity.
The “Cetáceos APP” is currently in the research phase, and KCS iT is exploring collaboration with universities and local partners.
