Operation Christmas: signs that the braking system may be in poor condition

Changes in pedal feel, noises and vibrations when stepping on the brake and longer braking distances are all signs of malfunction, warns Euromaster.

With the Christmas season fast approaching, thousands of Portuguese will be hitting the roads to visit family and take part in the festivities. Given that braking is one of the most critical systems in a car, Euromaster - a specialist in comprehensive vehicle care and maintenance - recommends keeping an eye on several key elements to ensure its optimal functioning and a safe Christmas.

Specifically, Euromaster identifies up to three signs that can indicate that something isn't working properly in the brakes:

1. Change in the feel of the brake pedal: if the pedal is harder or softer than usual, you probably need to change the brake fluid.

2. Noises and vibrations when stepping on the brake: these can be caused by deformation of the brake discs.

3. Longer braking distances: in this case, it is necessary to check that the pads are not worn or that their material has not crystallized.

The danger of bad brakes extends to both the city - where an unexpected traffic light or pedestrian can surprise the driver - and the open road, where the consequences of poor braking can affect both the vehicle itself and other drivers, even in opposite directions.

For this reason, Euromaster recommends carrying out proper maintenance on the braking system and replacing some of its components - fluid, pads and discs - in good time. Although there is no

fixed mileage for replacing the brakes, it is recommended to check them more thoroughly after 20,000 kilometers.

Main elements of the braking system:

There are three main components in the braking system. The first is the brake fluid, which is responsible for transmitting the pressure exerted by the brake pedal to the wheel cylinders. In this regard, Euromaster would like to remind you of the importance of checking both the level and its condition in order to avoid failures.

Secondly, the brake pads, which are responsible for exerting pressure against the disk to reduce the vehicle's speed. It is precisely this constant friction that is the main cause of their wear, but timely replacement prevents damage.

And thirdly, the brake discs, which are responsible for reducing the vehicle's speed or stopping it completely through friction with the brake pads.
