Pondering the year that is beginning implies reflecting on the year that has passed. And this reflection is more important than ever as we enter 2021.
A virus which had never been heard of until just over a year ago killed millions of people, forced cities to a standstill and accentuated economic and health divisions. Many will be eager to move on, but first we must apply the lessons learned to build a better future.
2021 was a year of stark contrasts. People on the lowest salaries had the biggest job losses, but stock markets boomed and professionals discovered that working online is more productive than many had imagined. Streamlining operations has saved money, but limited supply chains and a smaller workforce have diminished our resilience.
It was also a year during which we showed compassion and creativity, whether it was weaving masks or turning closed restaurants into suppliers of goods when panic buying almost emptied the supermarket shelves.
Working together, whether distributing food or developing a vaccine, allows us to achieve much more than working alone.
It will take a Herculean effort by everyone to end the pandemic and also to stimulate sustainable economic recoveries that help millions find new businesses and different ways of earning a living.
