The Importance of Crisis Management

In a crisis situation, of whatever kind, there are choices to be made. Sometimes, and especially when we're talking about a certain type of brand or organization, there's a temptation not to want to face up to the situation at hand.

However, although the actions to be taken must be measured and thought out in a very calculating way, sometimes silence can be far more damaging to the reputation of a brand or organization than reacting to controversy.

In this type of case, it's important to take a few things into account.

First of all, it is extremely important to define precisely what you are going to say. One of the main concerns should be to question the accusations themselves and not to attack the other side of the “barricade”. Demonstrating that the company cares about its employees and customers is also important.

Secondly, the choice of spokesperson is particularly important. The message to be conveyed may be perfect, but if the person chosen to make it public isn't the right one, it won't have much effect. Their position within the brand and their ability to communicate should be taken into account.

Finally, since communication is also about how we do it, the communication channels we use to respond to a crisis situation are also important. A press release isn't always the most appropriate, nor is social media.

Silence may seem like the safest response to a crisis situation, but the truth is that this is not always the case. A reputation of a brand must be defended, even if this means taking responsibility for a certain act. The importance of Crisis management.
