The Rise of the Media

There are a number of fundamental characteristics of the mass media that are not new in the history of human communication. But thanks to the rise of the media media, have taken on new significance.

Old attributes in new contexts

A a new philosophy for businesses It means relinquishing control and adopting protocols, principles, and practices that enable and foster interactivity on social media. However, interactivity takes many forms. Websites offer two types of interactivity. One is functional interactivity, which allows users to select content in different formats (text, audio, video) but provides limited opportunities for comments, for example, in ‘feedback’ or ‘contact us’ boxes.

The other is contingent interactivity, which involves reciprocity in the sending and receiving of messages. It is called this because these exchanges depend on the content being discussed and the messages sent.

Users’ experiences and perceptions are enhanced by both functional and contingent interactivity. The selection and consumption of predetermined content is secondary. Higher levels of interactivity, in which users can interact and engage in dialogue, collaboration, and content creation, are a hallmark of social media and lead to engagement and participation.

Public Relations and the Media

Public relations should involve two-way communication. However, traditional media have historically provided few opportunities for this. But through their interactive nature and open access, social media enable and facilitate two-way communication. Social media offers the potential to significantly improve public relations.

True communication must involve dialogue. Openness toward the other party is essential for building relationships. In public relations, there is an emphasis on two-way interaction. For this reason, by providing opportunities for two-way communication, the media enable dialogue-based public relations.

In the early 20th century, with the growing popularity of social media, there was a profound shift in the media landscape as interaction between professional and amateur media content creators increased. Today, people who were previously referred to as consumers and audiences produce a large portion of the news, information, and multimedia content in circulation.

The rise of social media has changed the notion that the public is a passive recipient of information and offers unprecedented opportunities for collaboration.
