In view of the current weather scenario, marked by continued heavy rain and the potential risk of flooding in various areas of the country over the next few days, the Euromaster warns of the main damages that can affect a vehicle that is exposed to water. The recommendation comes in a context still marked by the impacts left by the Kristin depression, which caused widespread damage to infrastructure and services in several regions.
Engine
If the vehicle is running when it enters a flooded area, it is very likely that water will enter through the engine intake, which could cause the engine to break down completely. In such situations, the water can enter the cylinders and, when the piston rises to top dead center, as the water is not compressible, the connecting rods deform, leading to complete engine failure.
In a vehicle that is around 15 years old, a complete engine replacement can easily cost more than 3,000 euros. In the case of newer, mid-range vehicles, the cost of a complete engine replacement can be between 10,000 and 15,000 euros.
Electronic systems and control units
In a relatively new combustion vehicle, there can be between 25 and 30 electronic units. In the event of a flood, it is highly likely that these units will be affected, either by the accumulated water or by the dirt and debris usually washed away during a flood.
The simplest electronic units have a base cost of more than 300 euros per unit, while a more sophisticated and technologically advanced one can cost between 1,000 and 5,000 euros.
Brakes and suspension
In the case of braking and suspension systems, thorough cleaning and proper drying can often be enough to solve the problem, and these are considered minor damages. It's important to remember that, along with tires, brakes and suspensions are among the mechanical components most exposed to bad weather, particularly heavy rain, accumulated water and projections resulting from driving in flooded areas.
Exhaust system
With regard to the exhaust system, it is essential to ensure that the accumulated water is properly removed, avoiding the retention of moisture which can lead to internal corrosion phenomena. Repair costs vary significantly, but are generally lower than those resulting from engine damage.
Vehicle interior
Repairing the interior of a flooded vehicle is, in most cases, feasible. Seats, dashboards, floor coverings and other elements of the cabin can be recovered, although the process is demanding. The minimum estimated cost for this type of intervention is around 250 euros, which can increase depending on the extent and severity of the damage.
Electric vehicle
Although the battery in electric vehicles is designed to withstand submersion, the main problem lies with the other electronic components. When an electric vehicle is submerged in a flooded area, it is very likely that these components will be severely or very severely affected, and in some cases it may not be worth repairing.
Car insurance and damage cover
Generally speaking, car insurance does not usually cover damage caused by natural phenomena such as floods, unless there is a specific clause or cover provided for in the policy. In most cases, it is the Insurance Compensation Consortium that provides compensation for material damage caused by natural disasters, including to vehicles.
