Operation Summer Vacation: the elements to check in your car

Summer vacation

Euromaster recommends monitoring eight main components: tires, oil, brakes, shock absorbers, coolant, wiper blades, lights and battery.

Year after year, many drivers have the image of cars stopped on the side of the road under the strong sun. To avoid these situations and ensure everyone's safety on the road, the Euromaster, a specialist in vehicle care and maintenance, recommends checking eight essential components before traveling, in preparation for the first major summer vacation operation of 2025, which will begin on July 27.

Tire conditionThese are the car's “shoes” and the only elements in contact with the asphalt. It is therefore essential to check that the tread depth is at least 1.6 mm - according to the law, although Euromaster recommends at least 2 mm - and that the tire pressure levels are adequate, as specified by each manufacturer. All this guarantees the tire's good grip on the road and extends its useful life.

Oil level and conditionKnown as the “lifeblood” of the vehicle, oil reduces engine wear and prevents costly breakdowns, which can exceed €6,000, which is equivalent to the cost of a complete engine change, if necessary. That's why it's a good idea to check the oil level and change it when necessary, along with the filter (which costs between €80 and €130), a worthwhile investment to keep the engine in good condition.

Brake fluid and pads: The brake fluid must be level and in good condition to ensure safe braking. It is recommended to change it every 2 years to avoid corrosion and loss of braking efficiency. In addition, brake pads, which cost between €80 and €140, should be replaced regularly to prevent damage to the discs and reduce the risk of accidents.

Shock absorbersThis component maintains the stability of the car and directly affects the control of the vehicle. A damaged shock absorber can also affect the effectiveness of the brakes and steering, compromising driving safety.

Coolant levelIn summer, keeping the coolant in good condition - which costs between 40€ and 70€ to replace - helps prevent the engine from overheating and possible engine breakdowns.

Wiper blades and fluidGood visibility is essential, especially in summer when storms can suddenly come up, or to clean the windshield of dust. Checking and replacing the wiper blades and topping up the wiper fluid ensures clear vision at all times.

How the headlights work: Properly functioning headlights allow the driver to see and their vehicle to be seen, reducing risks in conditions of low or poor visibility, especially at night or in adverse weather conditions.

BatteryA battery in good condition ensures the engine starts smoothly and the entire electrical system works properly. It is recommended that it be checked at least once a year, as its useful life is on average five years.
