Lisbon, April 2019 - Nielsen BASES, the product innovation analysis area, has unveiled its latest "Top 25 Breakthrough Innovations" list. The report highlights product innovations launched on the European market in BGC categories that have been successful in the retail sector, based on results analyzed by Nielsen.
Some of the common factors driving innovation among this year's winners are related to brands that demonstrate exceptional capabilities not only in gaining market share and growth, but also in implementing specific innovation strategies. These brands have succeeded because they have listened to their consumers, explored packaging design and achieved excellence in sales processes. Innovations range from short-lived initiatives to products related to trends in demand for healthy consumption options and even niche-oriented products aimed at improving the relationship and interaction with certain types of consumers. Other brands are focused on appealing to premium shoppersfor example.
"In the BGC market, the pressure on marketing managers to innovate and provide a unique and differentiating offer is high," says Cristina Rojo, Innovation Business Partner from Nielsen. "Consumer behaviors and needs have been changing over time, evolving with the emergence of e-commerce, private labels and exposure to digital platforms, which allow brands to adopt a personalized message. This huge competition for consumer attention has made product innovation a challenge for BGC companies."
Inclusion on Nielsen's "Top 25 Breakthrough Innovations" list includes the requirements of differentiation, relevance and resilience, and assesses how brands employ a wide range of strategies that make them successful.
